A reflexology treatment

All About Reflexology

As a recent request from many patients within our Chadderton clinic, we introduced Reflexology treatment as a supplementary treatment option and felt it would be good to share a little more about it with you.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a type of alternative therapy that involves the application of pressure to specific points on the feet and hands. The theory behind reflexology is that these points, found in the outer extremities, follow neural pathways and correspond to specific organs and systems in the body. Therefore, by applying pressure to them, messages are sent through those pathways and the body’s natural healing processes can be stimulated, leading to improved health and well-being.

How does Reflexology work?

During a reflexology session, a practitioner will use their fingers and thumbs to apply pressure to specific points on the feet or hands. The pressure applied may be firm or gentle, depending on your needs and preferences. The Reflexologist may also use other techniques, such as massage or stretching, to further promote relaxation and healing.

How could Reflexology benefit me?

There are several reasons why someone may choose to use reflexology as a form of therapy. Some of the potential benefits of reflexology include:

  1. Reduced stress and anxiety: Reflexology can help promote relaxation and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. By stimulating the body’s natural relaxation response, reflexology can help individuals feel calmer and individuals often state they are more ‘centred’.
  2. Improved circulation: By stimulating the reflex points on the feet and hands, reflexology can help improve blood flow and promote better circulation throughout the body from the extremities.
  3. Pain relief: Reflexology has been shown to be effective in reducing pain and discomfort, particularly in the feet and hands.
  4. Improved sleep: As it induces feelings of relaxation and calm, and promotes healing throughout bodily organs and various biological systems, reflexology can often help individuals to sleep better, a perfect way to start a healthier cycle.

When would I choose Reflexology?

It’s important to note that reflexology should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment, but rather as a complementary therapy to support overall health and wellbeing. Within our clinic we often find that those who have regular chiropractic or sports massage also experience great benefits from Reflexology treatment. It is also a great treatment for those who are experiencing challenges with their mental health, due to the strong evidence base linking reflexology with improved wellbeing.
