One of the questions we hear most often in clinic is: “Which Pilates class would actually suit me best?”For many people, starting Pilates can feel slightly overwhelming.
You may be managing an injury, dealing with stiffness and aches, returning to exercise after a long break, or simply unsure whether you’re “fit enough” to begin. Others may already attend classes and want to know how to progress safely into the next step.
That’s why we wanted to put together a simple guide to the different classes available at Grounded Oldham (based in Chadderton), helping you understand what each class involves and who it may suit best.
As the sister studio to our chiropractic and physiotherapy clinic, Grounded offers a range of movement classes that support strength, mobility, control, posture and confidence in movement.
Whether you’re completely new to Pilates or looking to challenge yourself further, there is genuinely something for everybody. So here’s a little about all of our classes, who they might be stuiable for and what you might experience within the class.
Mat Pilates
Mat Pilates is often the best place to begin, especially if you’re newer to movement, returning after injury, or wanting to improve the way your body moves and feels.Rather than focusing on intensity or speed, mat Pilates is about understanding movement properly. Classes focus on control, posture, breathing, awareness and building strength through precise movement patterns. For many people, it becomes the foundation that helps them move better not only in exercise, but in everyday life too.
It’s also an excellent option for people who want to complement treatment they may already be receiving in clinic, helping maintain progress between appointments and improve long-term resilience.
Power Pilates
For those wanting something more dynamic, Power Pilates offers a faster-paced and more strength-focused class environment.
While still rooted in Pilates principles, these sessions are designed to challenge you more physically, with flowing sequences that build strength, stability and endurance. If you already have some Pilates experience and enjoy leaving class feeling worked, energised and challenged, this is often a great next step.
Yoga
Yoga at Grounded focuses on movement, mobility, flexibility and relaxation, with classes suitable for different experience levels.
Some sessions offer a slower and gentler pace, ideal for beginners or those wanting more restorative movement, while others provide a stronger flow for people wanting more challenge physically. What many people enjoy most is the balance yoga creates, helping improve movement quality whilst also creating space to slow down mentally.
For patients who struggle with stress, tension, stiffness or recovery, yoga can often become an incredibly valuable addition alongside treatment.
Beginners Reformer
Reformer Pilates has become increasingly popular in recent years, but starting can feel intimidating if you’ve never used the equipment before.
That’s exactly why Beginners Reformer exists.
These classes are designed to help people build confidence with the reformer beds whilst learning the foundations properly. Sessions move at a steadier pace with more guidance around breathing, positioning, control and technique, making them ideal for complete beginners, those returning after time away, or people rebuilding confidence after injury.
The additional support and resistance from the reformer can actually make movement feel more accessible for many people than traditional exercise classes.
Reformer
Once comfortable with the basics, most people progress naturally into regular reformer classes.
These sessions provide a full-body workout that can be adapted to different abilities and experience levels, meaning you do not need to be “advanced” to attend. The beauty of reformer Pilates is that exercises can be progressed or modified depending on the individual, allowing people to work at the level that feels right for them.
Classes focus on building strength, improving control and developing better body awareness, all whilst keeping movement low impact and joint-friendly.
Progressive Reformer
For those already confident with reformer Pilates and wanting more of a challenge, Progressive Reformer offers a more advanced environment.
Classes move slightly quicker and introduce more complex exercises and progressions, requiring greater control, strength and coordination. These sessions are ideal for people who have built solid foundations and are ready to push themselves further.
Tower Pilates
Tower Pilates is slightly lesser known but often becomes one of people’s favourite classes once they try it.
Using spring-loaded tower equipment, these sessions combine support and resistance in a completely different way to mat or reformer Pilates. The result is a slower, controlled style of movement that focuses heavily on posture, mobility, strength and deeper stretch wor,
For people who enjoy mindful movement but still want to feel challenged, Tower can offer a really unique experience.
A Final Thought
One of the biggest misconceptions around Pilates is that you need to already be flexible, strong or experienced before starting. In reality, Pilates is often most valuable for the people who feel they’ve “lost” confidence in movement, are carrying ongoing aches and stiffness, or simply want to feel better in their body again.
The key is simply finding the right class to start with.
